August was one of those months where I felt like I was kicking goals left, right and centre and gee, it was a nice feeling!

Some of these goals were related to new activities we have got off the ground which are captured in this month’s newsletter (check out the Career Profile with Head of Google Research Grace Chung and the article by George Institute’s Guunu-maana team in the lead-up to our social media Inclusion Challenge!).

But most of the goal-kicking has been personal. In the last few months, I have been trying to lift up from the day-to-day activities and focus on some of FW’s bigger-picture ambitions. Despite having the most wonderful team ever, I have trouble letting go, which I think has a lot to do with the fact that FW was my side-hustle for so long that I still see the organisation as one of my ‘children’. But the time has come for this ‘child’ of mine to grow up, which means I have to grow as well. When I look back at this month, I see so many examples where I have resisted the temptation to contribute to work the team is leading, and in turn gave myself the capacity to focus on my own to-do list of operational stuff – I wrote letters to Ministers, had a few *scary* strategic meetings and spent time on some of our new financial reporting tools.

The last of these big-picture activities on my list for this month was to create a survey to seek feedback from you, our community of women, allies and stakeholders, to advise us on where we should focus our energy next year.

I have now ticked it off my to-do list, which means I am graciously adding it to yours, hoping you might take 5 minutes to complete it here.

Happy reading,

Here Keziah Bennett-Brook, a Torres Strait Islander woman and Program Head, and Dr Julieann Coombes, Gumbaynggir woman and a Program Lead, share more about cultivating culturally safe workplaces and the Guunu-maana (Heal) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Program at The George Institute for Global Health:

Hey you mob!

It’s Kez and Juls from the Guunu-maana (Heal) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Program at The George Institute for Global Health. We are super excited to be partnering with Franklin Women for the 2024 inclusion challenge with the focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander allyship. Some of the key themes we will be exploring within our webinar include: What is allyship? Do you know how to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, colleagues or communities? What is your workplace doing to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is seen, celebrated and respected? How do you move beyond tokenism?...

How many times have you said ‘I just need to get through this week, things will calm down soon’, and it doesn’t turn out to be the case? This feeling of just surviving is all too relatable.

Here Dr Indira Sam, former public health physician and academic turned work–life success coach, talks about how we can make some positive changes to shift from survival to thriving:

As a work–life success coach and research coach, I’ve helped women in health and medicine move from overwhelm to creating lives that are both successful and fulfilling. I understand the unique challenges faced by women in academia, medicine and research. The relentless drive for excellence often leaves little time to nurture personal interests and wellbeing.

I have learnt that finding balance isn’t about doing less – it’s about doing what truly matters to you...
