Has anyone told you the quote ‘growth comes from doing something that makes you uncomfortable’?

I have heard it a few times but dismissed it as one of those inspirational quotes that don’t have any meaning IRL ;)

However, earlier this month this quote flashed before my eyes as I realised that I had signed myself up to do something scary. I was at the annual networking event we host for our Mentoring Program Alumni.

The intention was to reconnect previous participants and continue conversations around leadership and how equity, diversity an inclusion fit in these conversations. I had invited University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and President, Prof Mark Scott, to join us for a candid interview that I. Would. Facilitate. I was determined to bring our alumni a speaker that they might otherwise may not have the opportunity to hear from. Someone who has had to lead through good times and tough times.

But the day leading up to the event I was sick with nerves and the moment before I went on stage I thought to myself ‘why do you put yourself in these situations, Melina?’.

After the event, I reflected on why I had put myself in such a scary situation, and I think the answer was because I cared. I wanted the event to be impactful for those in the room.

So, did I grow from the experience? The jury is still out, but I now have an evidence point that I can refer to when I am next doing something scary to remind me that I will be ok <3.

I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter, with stories from our community on learning new things, top career tips for ECRs and wonderful career profile with Dr Gemma Doleman.
